NEW YORK - A longtime Denison couple received a very special award this weekend for their philanthropic efforts.

Lacy and Dorothy Harber received the Ellis Island Medal of Honor , an award designed to pay homage to the immigrant experience, as well as for individual achievement, in New York City over the weekend.

The Harbers, who own several businesses including American Bank of Texas, have donated generously to organizations in Texoma and around the world, and they say they have no plans to stop giving.

"It's our goal to leave one billion plus to help the children. Thank you, and God bless America," Lacy Harber told the crowd in New York when he accepted the award.

The Harbers have made multimillion dollar donations to both Texas Health Presbyterian-WNJ Hospital and Texoma Medical Center, in addition to their work with disabled children.

The Harbar's are an excellent example of giving, caring people! I'd like to know why ( other than the obvious..their generosity ) they received this particular medal. Are they immigrants themselves, children or immigrants, or have they helped immigrants? We are lucky to have the Harbars in our area!

Bless this generous couple. Yes, as a teacher, I wish more young adults could learn the importance and rewards of helping others.

This gentleman needs to be teaching at a school. It's a shame to have all of this knowledge about life and not share it with young people. I know that he does enough already, but to be able to share this with young people would be an even greater gift than money.

Wish there were more people in high places that felt the same.
