SHERMAN, TX -- United Way of Grayson County is bringing awareness to childhood obesity through a family friendly event. For this Mom's Everyday Family Fun segment, we'll look at a way your family can not only have fun, but help the community.
2012 United Way of Grayson County campaign chair and Denison city manager Robert Hanna is excited for this year's Fun Run.
"We're going to be kicking off our third annual Hustle for Health. The whole point of this is to kick off our annual campaign for United Way this year," he said. "1.35 million dollars is our goal. We really need everybody's help to do it. We really want everyone to come out and participate in this run. It kind of sets the whole tone for the whole event."
Not only will it raise community funds, but bring awareness to childhood obesity with the help of sponsor Cigna Healthcare. (*Cigna Healthcare video provided by United Way of Grayson County promotional video by Red Letter Media Group.)
"They've been doing it now for a number of years and we're grateful for their assistance in all this," Hanna said.
The 1k, 5k and 10k follow paths that start and end at the Municipal courthouse in Sherman. For the last two years, this race has helped the agency raise funds for non-profits.
North Texas Youth Connection Chief Advancement Officer, Dr. Jan Elias is grateful for their funding, "which certainly helps us deliver our services. We do residential and non-residential services for homeless and abused children and also children and families," she said.
This year's fun run will feature the Willy Kickit band and have something for everyone in the family.
"I think the Strut your Mutt section of the event is going to be a fun for the kids to see, all the dogs that may be there," said Hanna. "Setting a tone in Grayson County for health and wellness is what the Hustle for Health is all about as part of our annual campaign kickoff, having an opportunity for all the families to do that together as a group I think really sets the tone. The family that exercises together is healthy together and that's a core point."
For those of us who can't make it this year but would still like to help meet their campaign goal, Hanna says, "a lot of people have an opportunity to give through their employees and what I'd really encourage people to do especially, it's been a tough year for everybody and some people haven't gotten raises but the need is just as big, if not moreso now in Grayson County than its ever been. I would really encourage people to search their hearts and give just, try to give a little more if they can."
And if you ARE free this Saturday, Hanna encourages you to "come out and join us. It'll be a lot of fun!"
