Bill Vehslage of Leonard was named the CASA Advocate of the Year by the Fannin County Children’s Center. As CASA Program Director Sandy Hood presented the award, she described the many qualities Vehslage had demonstrated while being an advocate for a little girl in foster care. At court hearings, Vehslage always had a heartwarming story to share about the young girl. Each month, without fail, he would meet with Hood to review the progress of the case, turn in case notes and his volunteer timesheet.

Hood talked about the support Vehslage gave to the mother as she was trying to get her life back on track to get her daughter back. For a period of time, the child was returned to the mother, but sadly the child eventually had to return to foster care. Once the case was nearing completion, the mother decided to relinquish her rights to her child. A few days later, Vehslage made a point to contact the mother to check on how she was doing after making such a life-altering decision. Vehslage’s case ended when the young girl was adopted.

Five year service pins were given to Leslie Ottmo of Windom and Robert Hood of Bailey. Ten year service pin was given to JoAnn Duncan of Trenton. Hood sang the praises of each volunteer as she presented them with these service pins. All CASA advocates who worked a case in 2013 were also recognized and given awards.
