Exploration of Mars concludes Profiles and Perspectives

ARDMORE, Okla. — In early August 2012, a SUV-sized roving vehicle named Curiosity hit the top of the Martian atmosphere at 13,000 miles per hour, decelerated for seven minutes and landed gently in Gale Crater on Mars. Gentry Lee watched it happened that day, and he will share the excitement of Curiosity and its’ Mars exploration mission as he closes the 2012-2013 Profiles and Perspectives season.

Salman Khan to Speak at Austin College

SHERMAN, TEXAS—Educator and entrepreneur Salman Khan, founder and executive director of Khan Academy, will speak at Austin College on Thursday, March 21, at 11 a.m. in Wynne Chapel. Khan is the 2013 Austin College Posey Leadership Award winner. The doors open at 10:30 a.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Austin College Presents Faculty Recital

Sherman, Texas—The Austin College Department of Music will present a Faculty Recital Sunday, March 24, at 3 p.m. in the Recital Hall in Craig Hall. The event is free and open to the public. Ian Thompson to speak at March lecture

(SHERMAN, Texas) March 5, 2013 —The Sherman Museum today announced that Dr. Ian Thompson will be the guest lecturer at the museum’s March 22, 2013 monthly Lunch Lecture series event. Dr. Thompson will speak on “Preserving and Revitalizing the Choctaw Heritage”. The free event will begin at noon and last until 1:00 p.m.

Blue shirts and signs on sale

Once again, the Fannin County Children’s Center is already making plans for April for Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month. As part of this effort, they are taking orders for their Blue Shirts and Signs. The royal blue shirts, yard signs and banners proclaim "No Excuse for Child Abuse" in bold letters. The back of the shirt includes the words "I stand up for kids."

GHS Debate Team Qualifies for National Tournament

Gainesville High School Seniors Conner Markle and Ty Hayes have qualified to compete in the Cross-Examination Debate at the National Tournament of the NFL, or National Forensics League. The NFL is similar to the UIL organization but geared for Speech and Debate. The National meet rotates locations across the United States from year to year. This year’s tournament is in Alabama.

Austin College Seniors Present Vocal Recital

SHERMAN, TEXAS—Austin College vocalists Anna Bryant ’13 and Evan Runyon ’13 will present a Senior Recital on March 3 at 3 p.m. in Craig Hall, Recital Hall. The performance is free and open to the public.
