SHERMAN, Tex. -- The Texas Attorney General has a new school safety initiative. On Tuesday, Greg Abbott stopped in Grayson County to push the plan.

Abbott’s new plan is simple: give children a safe place to learn without fear. His goal is to save lives when seconds count.

This means he's calling for new safety measures designed to protect students from school violence.

Abbott wants Texas schools to be safe and secure, so he's traveling throughout the state to help schools improve campus safety.

"We’re going to schools across the state. I will personally visit schools from the Valley to Amarillo, from East Texas to West Texas and all places in between, because there is nothing more important than to protect students lives through tools, and we are giving school districts and administrators real tools to put to use immediately and to make schools as safe as possible,” Abbott said on his Tuesday stop at Sherman High School.

Sherman ISD has already implemented an emergency system.

"We're excited for him to come to Sherman, and we think we have good plans and measures in place here and saw many initiatives sharing across the state we have in place already in Sherman,” Sherman ISD superintendent Dr. Al Hambrick said.

Hambrick says staff and student safety is their number one priority.

"We’re going beyond expectations set as his level," Hambrick added.

But above all else, officials say it's important that students are safe while they are trying to learn.

"We have to continue preparing and be on guard. That's ongoing work we continue to do.”
