New TAKS test date set

Some Texas students will take the state's standardized test later than originally planned so that it won't coincide with Election Day.

The Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills was set to start on March 4th, but that's the same day as Texas' primary elections.

Many schools serve as polling places, and some superintendents were afraid students would be distracted by voters while they took the TAKS test.

Now, tests scheduled for March 4-6 will be given a day later than originally scheduled.

TAKS test rescheduled:

OLD DATE: MARCH 4TH - 6TH

NEW DATE: MARCH 7TH-9TH

My husband let his 3rd grade girls stay with their mom in TX for this school year only. We homeschool here and all we have heard all yr is test test test from their mom and them. We so regret this decision partly because of this. Here we work for mastery of subjects.. not some stupid test! I told my husband all along that it was all about teaching to the test. I am going to read these comments to him, although at this point I am preaching to the choir where he is concerned cuz he has figured it out now.. too late. At least next year they will be back to the basics of REAL education and REAL world socialization instead of associating all day with a nothing but a bunch of people their exact same age. Here they socialize with lots of people of all different ages. Schools need to have kids work for mastery, maybe then the drop out rate would not be 30 to 40% as they said on the news the other night.

this is taks test stress kids out soooo bad and i also agree they need to do away with this taks test and get back to teaching this basics and not just teach the kid how to take the taks test and prepair for the taks test all you hear being taught in class is the taks test should be called the attack on the kids and stress the kids out test.

They should do away with the taks test. My daughter is in 2nd grade and most of the test she has been given this year are ones to prepare for the taks test in 3rd grade. Her class takes about 7-8 test per week not counting spelling test. A I just 10:40am because the taks test were starting. And I can't be there with her next year for lunch while the school is testing. They are more or less locking the school down from outside interverence in their precious test.

I'm a teacher and they definitely need to get rid of the TAKS test. All we (teachers) are allowed to do is teach the TAKS. It's all we have time for. So, Texas students know how to take the TAKS. What else have they learned for the real world? Not much, if anything. Even my students realize this fact. Sad, isn't it.
