ARDMORE, Okla. -- School may be out for the summer, but that doesn't mean school boards are taking time off. The Ardmore Board of Education met Tuesday night to hear recommendations of a special committee made up of citizens from across the community.

The Facilities Committee is made of 28 individuals who have agreed to help the board come up with a plan of action to improve Ardmore’s elementary school system.

Administrators say the problem is a growing elementary student body, and aging, cramped facilities. The committee’s recommendations include keeping most of the neighborhood elementary schools and call for up to 30 more classrooms at the new Charles Evans School. They say at least six more rooms are needed at Jefferson Elementary, and the rough plan outlines a major renovation of the existing Franklin Elementary.

Committee members say it is important that their recommendations be acted on.

"Our facilities have deteriorated very badly and we need to do something. Otherwise we are depriving our children of the quality of learning facilities that they deserve," committee member Everisto Chikanga says.

The committee says students of Lincoln Elementary on Stanley Street should be sent to other schools in order to make room for the Take 2 Academy, an alternative school that serves students from Ardmore, Marietta, Turner, Thackerville, as well as Davis. That school is currently on Springdale Road and is actually in a facility owned by the Dickson School District.

Lincoln Elementary was built in 1928 and is home to just over 200 students from grades 1 through 5.

Kids have been graduating from a normal school long before Take 2 was ever here. Take 2 is a waste of money!

the other school districts pay ardmore for taking their students in. Ardmore does not pay the bills to educate the students from other schools. Take Two serves a huge purpose. These kids wouldn't be graduating without it, how is that good for the economy republican?

Why is the Ardmore School System educating delinquent students from other school districts to begin with. Why should the taxpayer in the Ardmore district pay the bills to educate delinquent students from other schools. I say let the other schools handle their own troubled kids and we'll take care of our own. It's that or just shut down Take 2 and put that money back into Franklin school.

I went to Take 2 my senior year. I am not a delinquent, I didnt have a troubled home, I have wonderful parents and I dont have a criminal record, not even a traffic ticket. I think I am an upstanding citizens. the schools didnt send me, my parents didnt send me, I had no reason to go. I just got tired of all the BS, needless to say I got my diploma and furthered my education. Before you start ridiculing parents, the kids, or the schools think to yourself at least they are getting an education and thats all that matters. To J-Take 2 is still in a residential area whether its in Ardmore or on Springdale Rd. Lets take out the jail also since the Take 2 Academy shouldnt be in a residential area and the jail is 3 or 4 blocks from one. Jake-regular school can also be called a reform school cause they are forming children to be doctors, lawyers, cashiers, mechanics, bankers, nurses. Children have to reformed from who they are to who they are gonna be. I know i am gonna be slammed but who cares

Like I said, cliquish, cookie cutter comments by some body who has no idea what they are talking about. I bet you're a fine upstanding Christian person in your real life.

The Take 2 School is a dumping ground for area schools to send their problem kids to so they won't have to put up with them or their parents

I cannot believe you J. Like it or not, these Take 2 students are children. Not all are delinquents. The majority of these kids have special needs or cannot tolerate mainstream school activities. Not every body in the world is going to fit in our little closed-off cliquish cookie cutter community that some of us want to live in. Not every body gets the same opportunities in life to be like those of us more fortunate. I am appalled that you would even say such a thing about other peoples children. I bet if your kids were having the same difficulties that you would feel differently. At least I hope so. Take 2 is a great program and provides an education as well as life skills to help these kids have greater success in the world after high school. Being a teenager is hard enough without the added pressure of being judged not fit to live and work in our neighborhoods. Remember, you are judged by how you treat others that are less fortunate than you.

i can't see why anyone would want the take-two kids in or around a neighborhood in ardmore

Why would you close neighborhood grade schools and require transporting children across town with gas a $4.50 per gallon. Why would you place a reform school in a residential area...This pla must have been mae by a packed board
