SHERMAN, Tex. -- Even though the first day of the school year has come and gone, the Sherman Independent School District is still looking for a new high school principal. Stephanie Brletic spoke with the superintendent about the search.

Last month, Sherman High School principal Thomas O'Neal resigned to take a position with the Anna Independent School District. Sherman ISD officials say they are working on filling the position despite the fact the school year is already underway. They say they want to make sure they find the right person.

Sherman ISD superintendent Dr. Al Hambrick says the district has been conducting interviews. In the meantime, assistant high school principal Peggy Van Martyr is serving as interim principal. Hambrick says Van Martyr has been serving in the position for the last month and says she has been doing a great job.

The school board is scheduled to meet next week and talk about finalizing details for the interim role. Hambrick says until the district finds the right person, the search will continue.

"We will continue to conduct our search, and when we find a good fit for Sherman Independent School District high school, then we will make a decision in that area," Hambrick said.

There is no word right now on whether Van Martyr applied or is being considered for the permanent position.

Hambrick says there is no set time frame to fill the position.

Thank God for Peggy VanMarter! She is awesome! Even thought she does not want the head job (and who could blame her), she is doing a wonderful job. All parents can rest assured that there students will be taken care of in the best way possible. She will make sure the rules are followed. I only wish she would apply for the job.

Let me be the first to say that traffic was terrible at Sory yesterday!!!! Are there any plans to make another entrance on highway 56? This is crazy - it took forever to pick kids up yesterday, and there were multiple police at school directing traffic. Will they do this everyday?
