GRAYSON COUNTY, Tex. -- As the November elections approach, it's a reminder of one right we have in this country -- the right to vote. Emi FitzGerald tells us what Texas schools are doing to make sure students never forget the importance of this right, or the others our country is built on.

"The Constitution allows us to reasonably write, say, even read what we want. And that's the history public school students are learning today." Denison High School social studies teacher Gloria Davidson says.

With full Constitution gear, Piner Middle School students are giving their “John Hancock,” signing the Constitution like the Founding Fathers back in 1787.

"Well, it kind of set a foundation of America," Piner eighth grader Kaylee Fuhr says.

In 2004 it became a federal law for every public school student to participate somehow in Constitution Day. In Denison, students watched a patriotic presentation and teachers incorporated the constitution into their curriculum.

"I don't think we realize that we have freedom of speech, we can worship were we want, we can protest, we can petition the government. I think it's important people know their rights."

In Sherman, students are learning about the Bill Of Rights and the freedoms that have made this country unique.

"We have the freedom to express how we feel in an open way."

"It’s a part of our U.S. history. It's also important to know our rights."

Though there are differences in how people interpret the constitution, just the fact there's peaceful dialogue shows that piece of paper still serves its purpose.

"This is a constitution that's been over 200 years, it's the longest run running and it's a testimony of our country."

Educators hope by studying the constitution every year, they can understand the importance of our rights as Americans.
