DURANT, Okla. -- There was a little extra foot traffic in Durant on Wednesday, as a community effort was made to get kids moving and save gas at the same time.

The Durant city council proclaimed Wednesday as Durant Walk and Roll to School Day. They set up key meeting locations for kids and parents to meet before school, and then Durant police officers and city and school officials -- with some help from Southeastern Oklahoma State University -- .all walked the students to school.

"There are students gathering all over town, and this is just an exciting day to get kids in the mindset that we want them to get out and be more physically active to promote healthy lifestyles," Durant grant coordinator Rebecca Parr said.

If you are interested in learning more about the program for your community, call the City of Durant.

I think it's a good ideal for the kids to get out and walk to school. But on the other hand there are not enough patroll around the schools. The police men and women of durant won't do the job that needs to be done on the streets of durant. So how can you trust a child to walk to school whan the roads arn't safe enough. My own personal opinion speeks for more than just myself. Is that there should be at least be 2 police men or women around all the schools every morning from at least 7:15am to 8:45am making sure children are safe. Then the same when school is out.2:30pm to 4:30pm .I mean come on guys can't you serve in durant like you were trained to do.If you don't protect our children then what kind of people are you.
