Durant 4th grader wins spelling bee at OU

DURANT, Okla. ― A fourth grader at Durant Intermediate School is spelling his way to the top.

“Phantom” was the winning word for Matthew Anderson, the first Texoma child to win the Pee-Wee Spelling Bee that took place at the University of Oklahoma last weekend.

Anderson says he studied for about three months by writing down ten words each night and studying those words before the spelling bee. He says he is excited that all his hard work has paid off.

"It took a lot of time out of my day, like 30 or 40 minutes, sometimes and hour if I was doing well," Matthew said.

Anderson’s prize was a $1,000 scholarship to the University of Oklahoma.
