GRAYSON CO., TX – A special needs class from Denison experience firsthand the old saying “it’s better to give than to receive.” Monday’s lesson for the B. McDaniel Middle School Life Skills class was helping others.

"Teaching my children or the students at B. McDaniel that giving is also a wonderful thing to do this time of year and it's a big lesson in life giving to those less fortunate than ourselves," said their teacher Kim Martin.

The small group of autistic students browsed the shelves of the Dollar Tree in Sherman’s Town Center, picking out and purchasing toys themselves to donate to Toys for Tots.

"The kids really understand that some other kid would really enjoy the toy that they chose,” said Martin.

As part of their unique Life Skills class, Martin teaches her students everyday skills such as finances, cooking and public interaction.

"Part of this community based exercise is to not only work with the cashier, to work with their own money, but to choose their own items. And so the kids got to pick and choose, and pay for whatever they chose,” said Martin of the shopping trip.

But Monday’s activity went beyond shopping.

"I think one of the biggest lessons in life, especially this time of year, is that it's better to give than to receive," said Martin.

And on a slow year for Toys for Tots the Life Skill class’ gifts mean more than ever.

"When you see special needs kids, you know God bless their little hearts, and you know they know what they're doing and it puts a smile on their face, it puts a smile on our face and how much better can it get kids giving to kids?" said Joyce Shadden, with Always Better Care and Toys for Tots.
