DENISON, TX - Since 2007, Grayson County College has been under construction as the school works to make massive upgrades to their campus. GCC's $45 million bond package from several years ago is starting to pay off as one of the projects is finished and the gym is close to completion.
The T-Wing, which houses the Academic Success Center, along with I-T facilities and the campus maintenance facilities is now up and running this week.
"We have at Grayson had to keep adding and adding on, so it was a big deal for us you know, in this area of the campus to add all of the computer facilities for the students to use,” said Virginia Thompson of the Academic Success Center.
An area of campus that was once lacking in computers is now a technology hub in the Academic Success Center. There are new updates to two large-scale lectures halls, computer labs and classrooms and offices.
Thompson says one of the biggest changes is the new Computer Testing and Tutoring Center, where students can take online tests in an academically approved environment.
"[The students] are able to come in here and use our facilities so it has helped a lot with the students and technology,” said Thompson.
The T-Wing isn't the only project at completion; the long awaited refinished gym is scheduled to open on February 6, 2010.
"It was a desperate need, compared to our entire conference we were one of the worst facilities, with the updates we have now we're at the top of the list. So that'll make a huge difference in recruiting plus just in the normal everyday use of it,” said GCC’s Athletic Director Theresa Barnett.
The newly refinished gym will be more than just a new basketball court; it also has a new aerobics center and fitness area available for P.E. classes and all students to use.
“It’s not just something for the athletes and the fans but it's also something for our educational institution too,” said Barnett.
And because construction on the gym is a few months behind on completion, the Vikings basketball teams have had to play all of their games away this season. So for the second half of the season, they'll be at home for eight straight games in the new facility.
