We continue our new series on First News A.M. of giving back to outstanding educators in the Texoma region. We visited Durant, and this week we travel to Pottsboro to meet this weeks Golden Apple Award Winner.
Karen Vanneste has been teaching for 25 years, 15 of those have been with Pottsboro I.S.D.
She not only teaches 7th grade math, but also coaches the school's U.I.L.
Vanneste's principal Wendi Russell nominated her.
"She is one of our great teachers," Russell said.
Ms. Vannaeste was shocked when our cameras made a visit to Pottsboro Middle School.
"I'm speechless. I'm excited," Vanneste said.
Vanneste told us she wishes more educators would be recognized for the hard work they do in the community.
"We don't work from 8-5. We spend a lot of time outside of school at home, away from our families," Vanneste.
Students tell us her hard work pays off when it comes to helping them learn in the classroom.
"I've been having struggles in math and she will help me, and that's what I like about that," one student said.
And that's why Karen Vanneste is this week's Golden Apple Award winner.
