DURANT, OK - Durant voters will head to the polls Tuesday to approve or reject a new school bond. School Administrators say the bond is designed to have minimum impact on Taxpayers.

Durant Superintendent Dr. Jason Simeroth knows there is no good time to ask for more money.

"We know where we are right now as far as the economy goes right now and we don't want to put any undue burden on the taxpayers but we do want to do the best we can for our kids," said Simeroth.

The Durant School District is taking a $7 million bond issue to the voters on Tuesday, but the measure wouldn't raise taxes a single cent.

"This is the amount we can ask for and keep things where they are at,” said Simeroth.

The majority of the money provided to schools by the state goes to paying salaries, not to pay for the maintenance of school buildings or buses.

Mark Webb has two kids in Durant Schools, and he says the fact that the bond won't cost Durant residents any additional tax dollars and that the money would be used to improve security and technology in the schools, makes the bond a win-win for Durant.

"The goal is to have a one to one ratio between laptops and kids in the school and this is where it starts," said Webb.

Dr. Simeroth says Durant schools have been a local leader in bringing technology to the classroom, and that's achieving some impressive results. Last year Northwest Heights Elementary school scored a perfect 15-hundred on state tests. Simeroth says by approving the bond issue, residents would help teachers ensure that trend will continue.

"You have teachers, you have technology and resources, and they do a fantastic job, and that is what bond elections are all about, is keeping schools like that and teachers like that exactly where they need to be," said Simeroth.

The bond is set to go to the voters on April 6.
