Budget cuts to force layoffs, campus to close at Achille Schools

ACHILLE, OK - Achille Public Schools Superintendent, Dr. Charles Caughern, Jr., confirmed Wednesday morning that Yuba Elementary will close at the end of this school year, and that six teacher positions will be eliminated.

The school, which is located east of Achille just off Highway 78, serves students pre-k through 6th grade. According to the district's website, Yuba Elementary School has 9 teachers. We're told the layoffs will not necessarily affect all teachers at Yuba, but instead there will be 6 positions laid off district-wide.

Dr. Caughern says those cuts will take affect at the end of this school year and the district will cut positions based on seniority and will only affect teaching positions.

As far as students at Yuba, there are 396 enrolled in the Achille School system. We're told the students at Yuba Elementary will be transferred to Achille Elementary School.

Dr. Caughern says the reason for the position cuts is that not enough students go to the school with the recent state budget cuts.
