SHERMAN, TX - The Sherman ISD Board of Trustees approved $337,000 in improvements to Bearcat Stadium.

At last night's school board meeting trustees voted to strip the current field and install a new drainage system underneath a new field made up of special sand, sod and grass.

The improvements are to keep the field from becoming a swampy mess during heavy rains, as has been the case in years past.

Sherman ISD Superintendent Dr. Al Hambrick says these improvements were necessary.

"The field conditions last year we thought increased the risk of injury to our students. It was important to us to provide a safe place for our students to perform and that the field was useful," Hambrick said.

Work is scheduled to begin in May and should be finished before football season begins in August.

the kids needing disipline aren't likely to participate in anything, work play or school.they have issues. this does not default the sports players as outstanding human beings. crowley put it best-whole nations moved by the antics of boys. forget war-we have the super bowl! forget politics-its the nba final five! would be a better country if sports were put in their place and only giving the credit they are actually worth. which isn't very much. imho. compare college coach pay to the professors to see what i mean.

I had to look and see just how many people were going to bash this story. I was right in thinking people would be angry because money is spent on sports. For the record, I teach students with disciplinary issues (and do not coach), and 99% of the students that I see are NOT involved in extra-curricular sports / activities. I applaud when monies are being spent to enhance these activities, and giving students more of a reason to participate. It HELPS ACADEMICS, and many people are too narrow-minded to see this.

Creating monsters... are you serious? I know quite a few of these young men that we call our "Sherman Bearcats" and they are good kids! Of course, there are always those kids that choose the wrong paths, but to take a topic such as the football field renovation and use that as a forum to bash our football players is a PATHETIC cheap shot!

@ David --- I don't see that anyone here has called the football players themselves as "Stupid, simpletons, and bullys" ... even though I am sure there are some in football as in all walks of life, thats just the way things are. I personally think football as a sport is stupid and do not see why so much money is thrown into the sport when it could be spent in much better places, like academics.

Living within your means is a excellent concept. Sherman has nothing to prove to other school districts. Under the current economic situation in Sherman, the best thing to do would be to take pride in what we have. What have we proven if we cause a hardship on the community? Give people credit for seeing beyond the surface. As long as the stadium is clean and well maintained, that shows pride. Personally, I am more impressed with someone who takes pride in a shack that they can afford than one who goes into debt for a mansion and feeds their kids bologna.

To the people that refer to football and football players as stupid, simpletons, and bullys. You folks need to learn the truth included in these ranks are kids that are standouts in the classroom.eagle scouts, active in church, music, and many great activites. Sports is an outlet to teach many good things. To refer to football players as stupid is like calling academics booger picking nerds.

Don't get on here and tell the people of Sherman that it is our fault and we need to build a new complex.. do you know how much that would cost? do you know how many people have lost their jobs in the area? And yet you want to tell the people that we should fork over more money we don't have to build a new field "like other schools our size." I don't know about everyone else, but I really could care less about what other schools have. Take your self consciousness somewhere else. I love Sherman football, but don't preach to me about a new stadium. How about preaching to the city government to spend moeny getting business in Sherman so I don't have to drive to Dallas everyday to work.

I'm interested what Greg is referring to that SISD has cut? Actually I'm impressed that SISD has managed to keep their head above water despite the idiot voters who rejected the vote in the fall that cost the district over $2 million dollars of STATE money. Get used to it people...high school football is not going away and never will. The athletes need a decent field to play on. We can't do turf because of the flood plain. What we really need is a real athletic sports complex like every other school our size has. Face it is time to do our community and our school proud and build a new complex. The existing field could still be used for middle school and other events.

If you are going to use the money for the stadium, then at least put it to good use and move the stadium out of a FLOOD PLAIN. All this work will get done and when there are heavy rains it'll still be a wet mess ... but football is stupid .. too bad I can't opt out of those taxes.
