DENISON, TX - A Denison High School student who died in June was remembered Friday night by friends and fellow students. Stephen Bernier was remembered by fellow band members and friends at Friday night's football game against Mount Pleasant.

After the band's halftime show the senior members presented an 8 by 10 foot sign to be placed over the band hall doors in memory of Bernier. On June 15, the Touch of Gold band member drowned when his canoe overturned on Waterloo Lake.

Bernier was the trumpet section leader and would have been a senior this year. His friends say his memory and leadership will continue to live on.

The sign cost close to $1,000, and was paid for completely by the senior band members.

Steve was so loved by everyone, and the impact that his loss had on these kids was profound to say the least. Experiencing a tragedy like this as teenagers will effect them the rest of their lives. I am so proud of the way these kids handled that experience. They have taken a devastating loss and used it in the most positive way possible for the band, the school, the community, and most importantly Steve's family. To me this shows the true character of these kids, and I feel confident when I think that in a few short years they will be our leaders.

Super Steve would be a junior this year but his hard work and dedication proved to be well beyond his age. Not a day goes by that we don't hink about him. RIP Steve, now you will never be rushed to finish your raviolis.
