Grayson County, Texas -- Texas ranks first in the nation for children who don't have food after school hours and during the summer, but local districts hope to improve that ranking with their free lunch program.
Its something we hear about everyday -- kids going to bed without a hot meal and in these tough economic times -- that misfortune is hitting closer and closer to home.
"Some kids they mostly eat when their at school, so when they go home during the summer they don't have a lot,"said Sina Couch, Denison ISD.
Couch is a first grade teacher in Denison. Many of the students she works with are from lower-income families who struggle everyday to put food on the table-- its something that's becoming a growing epidemic around Texoma --
"I do hear from our principals and counselors that the only meals that are received are in the schools and so when schools out their not getting fed,"said Denison ISD Food Service Director Debbie Hosford.
And that's why this summer -- Denison ISD is making changes to its free summer meal program to reach more families around Texoma.
"The government is asking us to expand our programs and we had already planned to do that to give more outreach to the students -- in addition to Mayes and Golden Rule Elementary, we've opened Terrell Elementary and Lamar Elementary,"said Hosford.
Starting June 9-August 5 -- the district will offer free breakfast and lunch to all kids up to the age of 18. They will offer $2 breakfast for adults and $3.50 lunches for adults.
The program doesn't just benefit students and their families -- it also brings an economic boost to the Denison community --
"This helps our staff because when summer ends they have no additional income coming in, so it also provides additional jobs for the community and that's a good thing,"said Hosford.
