ARDMORE, Okla. (KXII) - Every year on the first Monday in May the City Commissioners vote on who will be the new mayor to serve that year.
During Monday night's meeting, the commissioners elected former Vice Mayor Sheryl Ellis for the position for 2018 to 2019.
Ellis says she was honored to receive the position and that this will be her fifth time in the seat.
The former mayor Martin Dyer, who was also named Oklahoma's Mayor of the year by the state, will stay on the board as a commissioner.
"Even though I may be the leader, I may be in touch with something earlier but the power remains the same," Ellis said. "The power is in the five."
Commissioner Keith King will now take Ellis's former position as Vice Mayor.
