Ardmore hosts first Great American Smokeout

ARDMORE, Okla. (KXII) - Ardmore held it's first Great American Smokeout Saturday afternoon, celebrating people living a tobacco free life.

Healthy living program coordinator, Kristi Combes, says the free event celebrated quitters while encouraging others to stop using tobacco products.

The festivities included a barbecue cook off where people could taste different meats and vote for their favorite, plus a car show and a kids firefighter challenge.

The event follows the third Thursday of November, which is designated by the American Cancer Society as a national intervention date for smokers to quit.

"We have a lot of people actually quitting smoking today at the event, so we are really proud about that," Kristi Combes said, "We are happy that they have done that."

Combes says they look forward to holding the Smokeout again next year.
