ATOKA, Okla. (KXII) -- The Atoka man accused of abusing a puppy is now behind bars after being on the run for the past month.

Steven Don Murray

Atoka County Sheriff Tony Head said Steven Don Murray, 40, was arrested Tuesday afternoon in Bryan County. He turned himself in after his vehicle broke down.

This past month, the Coalgate Animal Rescue took in an 8 week old pitbull mix named Nysha.

The puppy had one ear cut off and the other ear partially severed.
Authorities alleged Murray tried to crop the puppy's ears at home, and when it went wrong, he dumped the puppy.

Murray is being held in the Atoka County Jail on animal cruelty charges.
