SHERMAN, Texas (KXII) -- The Montessori Academy of North Texas and the Texoma Regional Blood Center have teamed up to help 14 year old Scott Middle School student Zach Alvarez who is battling T-cell ALL leukemia.
The community was asked to come out Tuesday to donate blood and the response from the community was strong.
"We have had an amazing response," Director of the Montessori Academy of North Texas Angela Magers said. "There has actually been several blood drives organized over the community for this purpose so it's been great."
For the donors, they wanted to help out a kid who is one of their own.
"One of our Met families, Montessori families is in need and Zachary is in need of both us giving blood, but also donations and so the least I can do is come out and give a little time and a little blood," donor Matthew Krov said.
"Just to help any child in need," Corey Clouse said. "I mean I really didn't know Zachary myself personally too much, but just knowing him and knowing that he's in need, just got to do my part to help those that are in need today."
Anyone who came out to the event also had the opportunity to donate money to the Alvarez family.
The family received a monetary credit that will be used for their medical expenses for Zach's treatment.
The members of the Montessori Academy made it their mission to help out a member of their family.
"Well, it's a good way for us to show our love for him and we always say, 'Once part of the Montessori Academy family, you're always apart of the Montessori Academy family,'" Magers said.
Zach attended the academy from age two to the second grade and made an impact on members of the academy's lives.
"Zach is this fun, loving 14 year old middle school boy who plays soccer," Magers said. "He's so active. Just always has a warm smile and a kind heart."
Whether they donate blood or money, the academy and the Texoma community are following the motto "Zach Attack Always Fight Back."
Even though the event has passed, you can still donate blood for Zach to the Texoma Regional Blood Center on Texoma Parkway in Sherman.
