ARDMORE, Okla. (KXII)-- This week, crews began maintenance work on a bridge in Ardmore, that will have it closed until the middle of next month, and I-35 underneath narrowed to one lane.
"We just use it to get back and forth to work, and its the fastest way to get to Ardmore without jumping on the interstate." Trent Bishop, who lives right next to the Bussell Ridge Road bridge, said.
The bridge closed Monday as crews began tearing up parts of the bridge, and laying down new concrete.
"It is very important for this type of bridge maintanance to be done, because it does extend the life of a bridge." Oklahoma Department of Transportation spokesperson Madeline Miller said.
The bridge will be closed through mid- February, along with intermittent lanes being narrowed during week days on I-35 below, at mile marker 27. But Bishop says he doesn't mind the wait.
"I mean, if they gotta do it, they gotta do it," Bishop said. "Its gonna be a better bridge when its done."
Miller says the project is lengthy because they are working one side of the bridge at a time, and weather conditions have to be just right.
But Bishop says the detour into town only costs him a few minutes.
"I just go down to the four way and take Hedges, and jump onto the interstate to get to Ardmore." Bishop said.
You can also use Hedges Road to get to U.S. 77, which will also get you into town.
And for those below on I-35, O.D.O.T just asks drivers to pay attention as the lanes narrow, and to be patient.
