COAL COUNTY, OK "If I got pulled over....I wouldn't care what they gave me..long as it wasn't a speeding ticket," Cheryl Eaves said.

"You're a safe driver it appears..so it's got a gift certificate for Subway... Merry Christmas," Sheriff Bryan Jump said.

The Coal county sheriff's department ... along with Troop E of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol conducted safety checks west of Highway 3 Thursday morning.

"Today...we're looking for safe drivers," Jump said.

Officers checked to make sure drivers had a valid license, insurance ... and no faulty vehicles.
Driver's who passed the safety check were given an award ... and a gift card to a local business or restaurant.

"A free meal's good any time...so very nice..very blessed," Maurica Franklin said.

Coal county sheriff Bryan Jump says his office has been doing the safety checks for the past three years.
Jump says the holidays are a crucial time to remind drivers to be cautious

"... [It's ] very important because we have so many drivers out on the road," Jump said.
"Just drive careful and get where you're going..try and be patient..everything will be alright." Sergeant Jeff Sewell said.

The local Subway is one of the businesses that donated gift cards for the cause.

"Just to see them get that free meal...and how much it warms their heart and puts a smile on their face..it kind of gets to you, like it makes you emotional..but it's a happy feeling," Toni Smith said.

"Christmas is all about giving..and uh obviously this sheriff believes in that and uh I'm just tickled that we could help them out," Sewell said.

"Merry Christmas....thank you...Have a good day," Jump said.
