Denison family loses home in a fire

DENISON, Texas (KXII) -- While many families are gathering for Easter, one Denison family is dealing with the loss of their home.

"We walked outside and the whole house was just engulfed."

This duplex on Doolittle Street in Denison caught fire around 12:30 Saturday afternoon.

At first, Jessica Clark, a neighbor, thought someone was outside grilling.

But she soon realized that wasn't it.

"the whole carport was engulfed and then the whole side of the house next door to her was starting to catch on fire and everyone was outside."

Vanessa Oquinn lives here with her mom and three kids.

she says the neighbors realized her home was on fire before she did.

"The same time we smelled the smoke, we could see it and the alarms when off all at the same time. So we ran out and we saw the whole storage unit on fire. We don't know what happened but it spread so fast."

Oquinn says she just moved in three months ago and used this area as storage.

"Everything was in there. All the kids clothes, shoes, just everything."

While she says this time will be difficult for her and her family, she's just happy they made it out safely.

"We could have been asleep, you know anything so I'm just, I'm really glad we were blessed enough to be awake and I'm just glad my kids were safe."

Their home has severe damage and the Red Cross has been called to assist.

Firefighters say the unit next door suffered minor smoke damage.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
