Fire burns two Thackerville homes

THACKERVILLE, Okla. (KXII) -- (UPDATED 2/8/18 @ 9:42 p.m.)

Two houses on Bellview Street were destroyed Thursday when a fire spread from one house to a neighboring structure.

A fire that destroyed two homes in Thackerville this afternoon has left an elderly man homeless.

"I started running, I ran over here to make sure he was out and okay, and everybody around was out." Relative Rebecca Bradshaw said.

Bradshaw was one of the first to arrive at her cousin's home Thursday afternoon, after seeing the smoke from the convenience store down the road.

"I don't know if it was gas, or whatever it was, but it was spshhhh, the fire was spraying out." Bradshaw said. "The whole back of the house was already in flames, it was coming all through the front."

Her 68-year-old cousin got out safely, but it destroyed his home that belonged to his late mother.

"He was devastated, in disbelief, he didn't want to watch and he left for a while," Bradshaw said. "All those memories, gone."

The fire spread to a nearby field, catching an abandoned house on fire and threatening others.

"I was pretty shocked to see it move so fast, and of course, I was just worried," Neighboring homeowner Crystal Hardin said. "I started hosing everything down like they said to do."

It took four departments less than an hour to get the fires under control, but several acres burned, and both homes were destroyed.

"Just shocking, just shocked. I feel really terrible for all the people that lost their house and stuff." (Hardin said.

We're told the man is staying in a hotel, and will be okay. And while memories may be lost, both women are relieved no lives were.

"He can always replace homes and possessions, but you can't replace a person," Hardin said. "So I'm glad that he's okay, I'm thankful to know no one's been harmed."

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
