SHERMAN, Texas (KXII) -- The Grayson County Health Department announced there have been nine cases of syphilis reported in May 2017 -- and officials said this was unusually high.

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease that can cause serious health problems if not treated. Health Department officials said the disease can also be spread through the use of dirty needles.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, Syphilis can be identified by a sore, or sores, near the genitals or in and around the mouth.

In the disease's latter stages, people can develop skin rashes, swollen lymph nodes and fever.
