Texas Rangers investigating human remains found in Paris vacant lot

PARIS, Texas (KXII) -- Paris police and the Texas Rangers are investigating after discovering human remains in a vacant lot of a Paris neighborhood Saturday.

"I knew they had found something there because they had roped the scene off, I didn't know if it was a fresh body or what," said Zac Smith, who lives a couple of houses down.

Police found the human remains Saturday a little before 4:30 p.m. Neighbors told us a man was mowing the lawn when he ran over the bones of a human leg. Some said the shoe was still attached.

Neighbors said the home and field, located in the 2800 block of Graham Street, has been vacant for nearly two years.

"I really don't know how to describe it," Smith said. "It's strange--definitely pretty close to home."

Police said they had cadaver dogs out in the area earlier on Sunday for additional help.

They said they're unsure yet how the human bones got there or why. They first have to send the remains off to a medical examiner's office. Then, they said they'll look at missing persons reports and try to identify the remains.

"It was quite a surprise," Smith said. "I don’t really like it."

The story will be updated as soon as we get more information.
