PARIS, Tex. (KXII) -- A Lamar County man with a long criminal history was sentenced to 50 years behind bars Friday.
Joshua Wiley Mitchell, 35, of Sumner was found guilty of second-degree felony aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and third-degree felony assault of a family member.
Assistant District attorney Jill Drake tell us that in late July, Mitchell repeatedly kicked a relative with his boots, fracturing her tailbone.
Drake says she argued for life in prison due to Mitchell having more than two dozen prior convictions.
Mitchell's lawyer argued for the minimum sentence of 25 years because Mitchell has Hodgkin's lymphoma.
Mitchell is eligible for parole after 25 years.
He will receive treatment for his cancer while in prison.
