Local church giving away free prom dresses

VAN ALSTYNE, Tex. (KXII) -- A Van Alstyne church is making sure every local girl has the chance to feel like a princess for prom, without paying a dime.

It's called the Cinderella Project.

"It melts my heart, it makes me feel good, I'm a single mom and it's a blessing," Stacey Browning said.

This is a moment Stacey Browning thought she wouldn't get, seeing her daughter in a prom dress.

"It means the world to me, to be able to be here to watch her, to look at all the dresses, they're gorgeous," Browning said.

The dress, shoes, jewelry, hair and makeup, prom is expensive.

"There's no way, there's no way that we could afford that," Browning said.

A story all too familiar for LaRissa Kemp.

"Three years ago, I took my daughter Grace prom shopping and realized how expensive the dresses were," Kemp said.

So Kemp got together with the women at Crossroads Community Church in Van Alstyne.

"We started asking everybody that we knew for prom dresses," Kemp said.

Word quickly spread. They collected 150 dresses to give out to girls the first year and now two years later, they have more than 350. Dress after dress, just waiting to be tried on.

"I didn't get to go to prom and so I love being able to help people go who may not have had that opportunity," Kemp said.

But it's not just dresses.

"We have all kinds of party shoes and pretty jewelry," Kemp said.

Also nails, hair accessories and makeup, all for free.

"To be able to come get a dress and accessories, so they are able to go to prom, it's amazing," Browning said.

Any girl in the area can make an appointment to pick out a dress at the church. They're open this Friday and Saturday.

"Everybody deserves a night to be beautiful and a special night with their friends, and it's just really a neat opportunity," Kemp said.
