Local teachers walkout at the Capitol

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (KXII) - Thousands of teachers, students and others gathered at the Capitol -asking the state to consider better funding for schools to go towards items like books and classroom supplies.

The rally comes just days after the state legislature passed a tax hike that would fund a six thousand dollar pay raise for teachers.

Teachers from Ardmore who attended the rally say it's a step in the right direction but it's not enough.

"The big issue right now is they've passed a teacher pay raise but they haven't provided the funding to make it happen so it's going to come back on our schools to pay for that," teacher Tonya Smithey said.

Ardmore teachers also spoke with State Senator Frank Simpson and Representatives Pat Ownbey and Tommy Hardin about that recent bill and why they feel funding education needs to be a priority.

"I think it went pretty well," Representative Tommy Hardin said. "I've explained my stances on things and I believe they've been pretty receptive - they don't necessarily agree with me but they can understand my concern."
