Miss Lake Texoma pageant returns after 52 years

LAKE TEXOMA, Tex. (KXII) -- The first round of the Miss Lake Texoma pageant kicked off Wednesday night, the first one in 52 years.

They held one in 1966 and it never happened again.

"And I said, 'Of course, absolutely. I'm thrilled.' So in January 2017, we started making plans," Daniel said.

Pam Daniel is the reigning Miss Lake Texoma from the first and only pageant in 1966.

"We didn't even know there was such a thing. It had been so long ago," Weir said.

So the Lake Texoma Association and Highport Marina decided to take action.

Executive director Terri Weir said the winner holds not only the title, but responsibilities.

"And she will attend our fundraisers and our meetings and our gatherings as our representative," Weir said.

Weir says seven contestants applied.

The swimsuit and interview competitions took place Wednesday night.

Thursday night the ladies show off their evening gowns and the winner will be announced.

"A girl that is familiar with the area, not necessarily from here but knows the area," Weir said.

"Inner beauty, outer beauty, bringing integrity," Daniel said.

Its Ashten Shelton's first time in a pageant.

Her grandpa was there for the one in 1966, and he encouraged her to sign up.

"And I knew that this was something that I wanted to be a part of. And I'm super passionate about the lake and this area, this is where I grew up," Shelton said,

She said it's a historical moment.

The Lake Texoma Association hopes the pageant will continue annually and grow in years to come.

"From this point on for decades, decades, long after I'm gone, there's gonna be a Miss Lake Texoma," Daniel said.

Daniel said while she's proud to hold the crown, she's excited for the next girl who will wear it.

"And to pass it on to a new, younger generation that's going to carry the torch," Daniel said.

Tickets for round two Thursday night are $75.

It will be held at the Tanglewood Resort and Conference Center from 6:30 to 10 p.m.

The pageant will be combined with the Bash for Cash event, an annual fundraiser for the Lake Texoma Association.
