DENISON, Texas (KXII) -- The Concerned Citizens of Denison said they were throwing an early Juneteenth party when the shooting happened here in Munson Park by the baseball fields.
About 200-300 people eating food, listening to a DJ and there was horseback riding and bounce houses for the kids.
"Munson Park did have a reputation especially after dark, but it's really not an issue we've lived here years very seldom any kind of activity that causes problems," says Ray Yeargan.
Yeargan lives near Munson Park.
"It's got a lot of nice features, a lot of terrain and a lot of inviting outdoor things," says Yeargan.
But Yeargan says he's surprised a shooting happened in the park he visits often.
"It really doesn't seem like such a dangerous place to hangout but apparently it can be a little more than what it seems," says park goer Dakota Mason.
Around 8 p.m. Saturday, Denison police said 20 year-old Damian Boyd was shot in the leg and hip with a handgun.
Friends of Boyd tell us he's a great father and would give you the shirt off his back.
Officials say Boyd was awake when first responders arrived and was sent to a Dallas hospital.
"It may have been associated with the celebration that's going on down there," says Yeargan. "Somebody may have got to celebrating too much and an argument developed."
Locals said whatever factors led up to the shooting, shouldn't deter anyone from using the park.
"Maybe for police to patrol here every now and then and I have seen them out here every often," says Mason. "But these things happen and there's not much you can do about it."
"I'm glad the young man is going to be alright," says Yeargan. "But it's really not the typical thing to happen in that park."
Boyd's friends tell us he's still recovering in a Dallas hospital and is expected to survive.
So far no arrests have been made.
