"I didn't know if it was somebody being crazy, out in the middle of nowhere shooting a gun, or what." Waylon Reed, who heard the gunshot said.

But Reed lives west of Marietta on Indian Meridian Road, off Highway 32, and says hearing gun shots isn't unusual.

"I mean, a gun shot out here, there's a deer stand [across the field of his home]."

But it was different Monday morning, when he heard a shot around 9.

"I heard somebody yelling, and that's when it clicked forward that something was kind of weird." Reed said.

He told his wife to call police, and ran outside to find Stephon Greene of Ardmore walking toward his home with a bullet wound to his leg.

"He honestly had no idea where he was." Reed said.

Reed's four years of army combat training immediately kicked in.

"Gun shot, apply tourniquet, treat for shock," Reed said. "Stay calm, keep them calm."

Reed says the bullet missed the artery, but there was heavy bleeding and Greene could have bled out.

Greene told Love County deputies he was shot by someone in a gold-colored sedan, which they found south of Marietta on Highway 77 soon after. An Alonzo Gonzales was driving.

"I don't know if it was a drive by, if this person was walking, it was a drive by, or if they were in the same car together," Love County Sheriff Marty Grisham said. "We don't know those answers yet."

They do know that Gonzales is from San Antonio, and faces a charge of shooting with intent to kill. The sheriff says its unclear whether the two knew each other, or what led up to the shooting. The Oklahoma Bureau of Investigation is looking into it.

Greene is recovering in the hospital and is expected to survive.

"He was really lucky, all things considered, the dude was a bad shot, and he happened to walk up to my house." Reed said.
