PILOT POINT, Tex. (KXII) - A pick-your-own strawberry farm has opened for business in Pilot Point.
Farmer Chris Demases and his wife Kylie own the farm. They said they've been growing strawberries for years.
"Last year we grew strawberries, and we saw the demand of people asking, 'Can we pick our own, can we pick our own?'" Kylie said.
So the idea of opening up the pick-your-own strawberry farm started to sound like a sweet possibility for the couple.
"We thought, we should try this," Kylie Demases said. "This is my grandmothers' land. It's been in the family over 100 years, and so she said, 'come out here and try it.'"
The two haven't looked back since.
"Within a week we made a decision to buy 10,000 strawberry plants," she said. "We planted them in November, and that's where it all started."
The Pecan Creek Strawberry Farm in Pilot Point off 377 is the first of its kind in north Texas. Public picking began on Wednesday, and the owners said they were picked out within an hour both days they've been open.
"We [sold out] out in an hour in 34 degree weather," Kylie said about Saturday. "We know the demand is here and everyone's been so friendly."
"It's awesome to see the people, the interest they have in picking their own strawberries," Chris said.
The farm opens at 9 a.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays. Buckets are $3 and strawberries are $5/lb. The couple said get there early and bring your whole family for a berry good time.
"We're so excited and so blessed to have such huge support," Kylie said.
