Police say man shot by brother after political argument

GAINESVILLE, Texas -- Gainesville police say a political argument ended with a man shooting his own brother in the back.

Johnathan Murphy and Darrel Murphy are brothers but it seems they don't agree on politics.

Gainesville police say Johnathan shot Darrel in the back after a heated political argument.

They say it happened at Johnathan's home off Dixon Street just after midnight on Thursday.

"When they arrived, they found a white male in the kitchen area and he had been shot once in the back," police chief Kevin Phillips said. "The suspect had fled the area."

One neighbor described the scene to us.

"I got nosey and walked to where I could see what was happening," she said. "After about thirty minutes they put a man in the back of the ambulance."

Officers found Johnathan in the front yard of a nearby home and he was arrested for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

People who live around here say the neighborhood is usually quiet.

It is anyone's guess which political issue the men were fighting about because police didn't know.

We went by the home on Thursday afternoon and the woman who came to the door didn't want to comment.

Johnathan is being held in jail on a $100,000 bond.
