ADA, Okla. (KXII) -- Pontotoc County Sheriff John Christian received the Patriot Award on Friday afternoon from the Department of Defense.

Pontotoc County Sheriff John Christian received the Patriot Award on Friday afternoon from the Department of Defense.

The award comes from the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve -- an entity of the Department of Defense -- that promotes support for military service members.

Deputy Zubair Khan, who's also a member of the Oklahoma National Guard, nominated Christian for the award.

Khan says the sheriff deeply cares for his employees who serve.

He says Christian has employed more than 10 members of the Oklahoma Army and Air National Guard.

Members of the Guard who also serve as deputies said Christian made their transition back into civilian life easier.

"I'm overwhelmed that they felt like I was worthy to be nominated for this award," Christian said. "And you know I'm proud of them and the work that they do not only for me, but for our nation."
