SHERMAN, Tex. (KXII) -- A fundraiser is underway Monday at La Mesa restaurant benefiting a Grayson County deputy in his fight against cancer.

A fundraiser is underway Monday night at La Mesa restaurant benefiting a Grayson County deputy in his fight against cancer.

Organizers say 20 percent of all sales from Monday night will go toward Capt. Rickey Wheeler and his family. Wheeler has worked in law enforcement for more than 27 years.

Wheeler began chemotherapy and radiation therapy this past March, but the stage 4 cancer has since spread.

Grayson County Sheriff Tom Watt said Monday night's fundraiser is a tremendous donation, and they appreciate everything the community has done to support Wheeler in this tough time.

"As you can well imagine he has his ups and downs," Watt said. "When you're fighting cancer you have good days and you have bad days. I talked to him a couple days ago and he was having some good days so that was good to hear."

Wheeler is married with two young boys.
