SHERMAN, Tex. (KXII) -- A new road in Sherman connects FM 1417 to U.S. Highway 82 and Lamberth, and will be the pathway to a future sports complex opening up in the next couple of years.
Canyon Creek Drive has been under construction for a little over a year, and the $2.5 million plot of pavement is now open for drivers looking for an easier route to U.S. Highway 82 on Sherman's west side.
The road will be home to the new Pecan Grove West Sports Complex, a $4.5 million project that will be home to new baseball diamonds and soccer fields. There will also be plentiful parking for events like Lights on the Lake and for sports tournaments.
"We’re really excited to be able to offer new athletic fields for the community," said Parks and Recreation coordinator Dylan Johnson.
"Right now, Sherman is growing at an alarming pace, which we’re really excited about, but along with that comes the need for more athletic fields for kids to play on and adults to use as well."
It's something locals like Chris Basker, who has two daughters, are excited for.
"We watched them clear it out, and have been checking the progress as it goes," Basker said. He said his 7-year-old daughter will play soccer on the new fields once they're open.
Phase two of the project will feature more playground equipment and a possible spray ground after the first sports complex phase is complete.
"They opened the disk golf course, and with that splash pad coming, it's a great thing for the community," Basker said.
Construction should begin by the end of 2018. The sports complex is expected to be open by 2020.
