TISHOMINGO, Okla. (KXII) -- Elementary students in Tishomingo celebrated their first day back to school with local first responders on Thursday.

Elementary students in Tishomingo celebrated their first day back to school with local first responders on Thursday.

Principal Melissa Ferguson says they planned to have a helicopter fly in for the kids, but the helicopter couldn't make it due to ground fog.

Instead, Tishomingo police spoke with students at an assembly about bullying, and local firefighters encouraged kids to always help others.

The Tishomingo softball team helped greet students as parents dropped them off.

"I am proud to work at Tishomingo," Ferguson said. "I am proud of this community that's rallied behind us, I am proud of the staff who's really rose to the occasion and these students they are top notch."
