DENISON, Tex. (KXII) -- The Denison Animal Welfare Group is hosting a dog adoption event on Saturdcay, several of which are rescues from Hurricane Harvey. A professional dog trainer even volunteered a week of his time to make sure these dogs are ready to be adopted by their new families.
"Dean-O, stop. Sit. Good boy," said Wagg the Dog Trainer Matt Waggoner.
Meet Dean and Dixie and their trainer Matt Waggoner.
"Lay down for me, good doggy," said Waggoner.
Waggoner is a professional dog trainer.
"I can tell by her temperament already she's gonna be a great animal," said Waggoner.
And has trained hundreds of dogs over the past 20 years.
"I teach all of them how to walk on a leash, I teach them how to sit, how to lay down and teach them to leave it so in case it does pick up one of your shoes you can tell it to drop it," said Waggoner.
Waggoner said shelters are typically stressful for dogs, especially a few dogs who've been through trauma or a natural disaster. So he trains shelter dogs for their fur-ever homes by teaching basic commands and making sure the pups won't destroy your belongings.
"I know the potential that they have if you just give them some education and some love," said Waggoner.
But Waggoner said his time spent at DAWG this week was all for free. Preparing these pups and 15 Hurricane Harvey rescue dogs for an adoption event at the PetSmart in Sherman on Saturday.
"Good girl, where's your spot? There it is," said Waggoner.
Waggoner said he will train dogs for free at shelters in Rockwall, Amarillo and The Colony in DFW for the next three weeks.
"You can work with anything and I love the fact that when they get adopted they already have such a head start," said Waggoner.
