This week's A+ Athlete is Chase Hamilton from Calera High School.
Chase's submarine mechanics torpedoed a number of batters last spring, as he posted a 0.48 ERA in 55 innings. He cites the run to state in 2014 as his favorite sports memory, but that's not what he is taking away from his time on the mound.
"Just keep going and not worry about what's happened because you can't change it," said Hamilton. "Just worry about the next pitch, the next play, the next out. You just have to keep going."
"He's competitive, but he's quiet about it," said head baseball coach Rickey Teafatiller. "We always thought Chase had a chance to play when he got older. He's a submarine guy and right now, people are looking for that type of guy. And to put his brains with his ability, it's really going to be a good combination at the next level."
Chase dominates in the classroom as well. He's a 4.0 student and named to the Superintendent's Honor Roll. Chase scored a 31 on his ACT and will have 16 college credit hours under his belt by graduation.
"Academics are the foundation of the rest of your life," said Hamilton. "And if you don't work hard today, you won't have the foundation to be successful later on in life."
"Chase is a guy that is very down to business," said social studies teacher Greg Thralls. "I mean, he's very focused and very driven. He's just a guy that gets in there. He doesn't fuss about anything. He gets the job done and he does an excellent job every time."
After graduation, Chase plans to study pre-med with goal of becoming a general practitioner. He also has an opportunity continue his baseball career at Southwestern.
And that's why Chase Hamilton is this week's A+ Athlete.
