This week's A+ Athlete is Jesus Hernandez from Collinsville High School.
Jesus helps lead the Pirate Ship at Collinsville ranking fifth in the senior class with a 3.6 GPA. He's a class officer and a National Honor Society member. By the end of spring, he'll have 18 hours of duel credit completed. Jesus credits his family, teachers and coaches for the drive to perform well.
"They've pretty much just pushed me," said Hernandez. "Ms. Flannery, Ms. Patterson, Coach Freese and Coach David, they've always pushed me."
"Jesus does a good job everyday," said Shannon Flanery, family and consumer science teacher. "Whether he's in the classroom, on the court [or] on the football field, he just works hard. Whatever he's doing, he's a hard worker."
That hard-work mentality transfers over to sports as well. Jesus received honorable mentioned all-state honors in football, qualified for state in track and he's an all-area basketball standout. Jesus appreciates how sports bring people together, and how it helped him persevere through an injury he suffered his junior year.
"Just pretty much hard work, honestly," said Hernandez. "I didn't think I could do it, but everyone pushed me that I could do it. And I tried to prove that I could."
"He brings an intensity that's unmatched by anybody else," said Preston Patterson, head boys basketball coach. "That's his biggest thing. When he sets his mind to doing something, that's what he's going to do."
After graduation, Jesus will attend Texas State University and major in Criminal Justice. And that's why Jesus Hernandez is this week's A+ Athlete.
