A+ Athlete: Ryan Wilder, Ector

This week's A+ Athlete is Ryan Wilder from Ector High School.

Ryan is a five-sport athlete for the Eagles. He's an all-district second team basketball player, a regional qualifier in cross country, runs track and plays baseball and tennis. It's through those sports that Ryan has come to love the comradery.

"The team aspect where we all have to get along and being friends," said Wilder. "From the sixth grade, I moved here in sixth grade, to where now everyone knows me and knows my tendencies to where it's all fun no matter what the sport is."

"Ryan is our leader," said head basketball coach Blake Turner. "He dealt with a couple of injuries in his career last year and this year. Even off the floor, Ryan was our leader. A vocal leader, an emotional leader. He does a lot of things for us in that regard."

Ryan leads in the classroom as well. He ranks third in the senior class. He's also the class treasurer, a member of the Gifted and Talented program, the National Honor Society, the National Beta Club, part of UIL Academic team and on the A Honor roll the past three years.

"It's the basis for a good life," said Wilder. "I know that if I continue my education, which I will, it'll be a good fulfilling life. I'll fulfill my purpose."

"I'm up here showing examples," said math teacher Kellen Murphy, "and he's asking questions for questions that are coming up in the homework because he's already looking ahead. He sees an example, and he has it."

After graduation, Ryan plans to attend college and major in business or physical therapy. And that's why Ryan Wilder is this week's A+ Athlete.
