NEW YORK (AP) - An Oklahoma native with ties to Durant is celebrating a Pulitzer Prize for drama.

Playwright Tracy Letts from Tulsa learned today he won the honor for his play, "August: Osage County." The play was born out of a unique collaboration between Letts and the place he calls his artistic home, Chicago's Steppenwolf Theater Company.

The result was a critically acclaimed play that premiered to glowing reviews last summer in Chicago.

"August: Osage County" is a brutal yet darkly comic play of bruising family battles spanning several generations of unhappiness and unfulfilled dreams.

Letts was a Pulitzer finalist in 2004 for his play "Man From Nebraska."

Letts grew up in Durant, Oklahoma. His father, Dennis, was a longtime professor at Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant before he acted in some of his son’s productions, including August.

Dennis Letts died in February at the age of 73.

As one of Dennis Letts'former students... WAY TO GO! It makes me very happy to know that his kids are doing well. I always thought a lot of Dennis and Billie. Your parents would be proud! a lot of Dr. Letts and Billie. Congrats!
