DURANT, OK - Makeshift operating rooms, injured lining the streets and limited medical supplies - these were the conditions for Durant surgeon Peter S. Hedberg during his visit to Haiti.

"The first day when I got there the operating rooms were outside, just a tarp hanging over two beds, and operating room paper drapes for walls on the sides to keep people from watching, but the patients were primarily on the ground right outside where we were working,” said Hedberg.

Just days after the deadly earthquake, Doctor Hedberg made the journey alone to Port-au-Prince.

"Of course I was a little bit anxious about the unknown, I think the thing that concerned me the most was not being able to be sure I was going to be able to get to where I needed to go and do some good,” said Hedberg.

All the while, he documented his experiences with pictures and video as he worked around the clock to help the wounded.

"Everybody was doing absolutely everything they could but there was just too much to do right away. Eventually it will all be taken care of but unfortunately patients are suffering while they're waiting,” he said.

Doctor Hedberg said he's familiar with the poverty of that region because he’s visited the Dominican Republican before to provide medical aid. But he said he's never witnessed anything like the destruction that is now Haiti.

"I haven't seen any devastation, suffering like that where there's just not enough people to take care of all the patients at once,” he explained.

After a week of service he's back in Durant, back to the daily grind. But Doctor Hedberg said his work in Haiti isn't finished, he plans to go back later this spring.

"It was so much to do and so many people helping, and I was just such a small part, but they need a lot of small parts to keep helping,” said Hedberg.
