Advocates raise awareness for domestic violence awareness month

PONTOTOC COUNTY, OK -- Recent reports show Oklahoma ranks third in the rate of women murdered by men, and domestic violence awareness advocates in Pontotoc County are working to stop that rate from growing.

According to Teresa Goodman with the Family Crisis Center in Ada, Oklahoma jumped from 17th in 2011, to third last year.

She says Pontotoc County was the first reported county with a domestic violence related homicide in 2012.

She says it's important to be aware that abuse is not just physical, but can be shown economically and emotionally as well.

"By educating the public, educating friends, neighbors, teenagers, our future society, our justice systems, and by having that education is what's going to raise awareness and help the victims out of the situations that they are currently in," Goodman said.

Goodman says a candlelight vigil will be held at the Pontotoc County Courthouse Thursday night to honor all victims of domestic violence. It will start at 6:30 in the courtyard.
