ARDMORE, OK - Some people find it uncomfortable, but many shoppers were all too happy to ditch an important article of clothing.
"You're down here when you should have shoes on and you go into the store with no shoes and everybody in there has no shoes on," said Vicki Groomer.
Some people were hoping to win a free pair of shoes on Tuesday afternoon at a clothing store called The Rage, but first they had to take off their shoes.
"It reminds me of being a kid and going in the ditches and playing around," said Dana Dempewolf.
The goal is to raise awareness about those around the world who don't wear shoes.
"It lets people see how kids walk around every day in worse conditions than these without shoes," said employee Hunter Nichols.
One Day Without Shoes is a nationwide event organized by a shoe company called Toms, which advertises that for every pair of shoes you buy, they'll give away one to someone who's in need around the world
The company says over 700 million people in other countries suffer with hookworm, which can be caught by walking barefoot in areas with poor sanitation. In Kenya, jiggers leave some kids with nasty rashes on their feet.
"I'm just grateful that we live in a country where we don't have to walk miles without shoes, just to get even our water and basic living suplies that we take for granted," Dempewolf said.
So as shoe shoppers delight in a product they enjoy, they took a moment to think about others half a world away.
