Man killed in Lamar Co. fire identified

LAMAR COUNTY, TX - Lamar County authorities have confirmed the man who died in a house fire early Monday morning was 67-year-old Roger Hooper.

Lamar County Sheriff B.J. McCoy tells us the home where the fire occurred belongs to 67-year-old Roger Hooper. He had not been seen or heard from since the fire around 1 a.m. Monday. Authorities confirmed Wednesday it was Hooper who perished in the fire.

It took seven fire departments to contain the blaze at the home on U.S. Highway 82 about a mile-and-a-half west of Paris near Brookston.

Sheriff McCoy says they are investigating the fatal fire as suspicious.

"Any fire [we investigate] is suspicious until we know what caused it," McCoy said.

McCoy went on to say they don't believe weather was a factor in what started the fire. The Texas Rangers and the State Fire Marshal's Office are also investigating. Hooper's cause and manner of death is still pending from the Medical Examiner's Office.
